How TopPulse Ranks P2P Platforms

Our Approach

TopPulse is a monthly magazine, not a static database. We do not assign permanent numerical scores to platforms. Instead, our editorial team evaluates and ranks platforms relative to one another each month, using the most current data, news, and regulatory developments available.

This approach reflects a simple belief: the P2P lending landscape changes, and rankings should change with it. A platform that deserved the #1 spot six months ago may not deserve it today, and vice versa.

The Five Pillars

Every monthly evaluation considers five pillars:

1. Regulation and Licensing

We assess the quality and relevance of each platform’s regulatory framework. This includes the type of license held, the jurisdiction, the regulator’s track record, and the practical protections that regulation provides to investors (segregated funds, compensation schemes, wind-down plans).

Platforms with strong regulatory standing (such as MiFID II investment firm licenses or Swiss SRO membership) receive favorable consideration. Platforms operating without meaningful regulation or with pending/unclear licensing status are ranked accordingly.

2. Track Record

How long has the platform been operating, and what has its performance been like? We consider:

  • Years in operation
  • Total loan volume funded
  • Historical default and recovery rates
  • Performance during economic downturns or stress events
  • How the platform has handled loan originator failures or operational challenges

A longer track record with demonstrated resilience carries significant weight.

3. Yields and Returns

We look beyond headline rates to assess actual investor returns:

  • Net returns after defaults and fees
  • Yield sustainability relative to the underlying loan risk
  • Fee transparency and structure
  • Whether the platform publishes verified portfolio statistics

Higher yields are only positive when they reflect genuine risk compensation, not unsustainable originator subsidies or hidden risk.

4. Liquidity

How easily can investors access their funds?

  • Secondary market availability and activity
  • Average loan durations
  • Early exit options and associated costs
  • Cash drag (how quickly new deposits are invested)

5. Transparency and Communication

We evaluate how openly and proactively platforms communicate with investors:

  • Loan-level data availability
  • Regular statistical and financial reporting
  • Incident disclosure and crisis communication
  • Management accessibility and responsiveness

The Monthly Process

Each month, our editorial team:

  1. Gathers current data from platform statistics pages, financial reports, and regulatory filings.
  2. Reviews recent news including regulatory announcements, originator changes, product updates, and investor community feedback.
  3. Assesses each platform against the five pillars, considering changes from the previous month.
  4. Ranks platforms relative to one another based on the overall assessment.
  5. Publishes the updated top-10 with editorial commentary explaining any position changes.

What Our Rankings Are Not

  • Not financial advice. Our rankings are editorial opinions based on publicly available information. They are not recommendations to invest in any specific platform.
  • Not influenced by advertising. Our editorial rankings are independent of any commercial relationships. See our disclosure page for details.
  • Not permanent. Positions change monthly based on new information. Past rankings do not predict future performance.
  • Not comprehensive risk assessments. While we consider risk factors, our rankings are not substitutes for your own due diligence.

Platform Coverage

We focus on P2P lending platforms that:

  • Accept European investors
  • Have a meaningful operating history (generally 1+ years)
  • Provide sufficient public data for evaluation
  • Operate in the consumer lending, business lending, or real estate lending segments

Platforms that are too new, too small, or too opaque for meaningful evaluation may appear on our watchlist before entering the main rankings.
